What Is AI Search Optimization? AEO and GEO for B2B Companies
When a VP of Engineering asks ChatGPT "who are the best DevOps consulting firms," your company is either in the answer or it is not. AI search optimization determines which side you are on.
The Three Eras of Search
Search has evolved through three distinct eras, and all three coexist today:
Era 1: Ten blue links (1998-2014). Google was a ranked directory. You optimized for keywords, built links, and competed for one of ten spots on page one. Users clicked through to get their answer. This was traditional SEO.
Era 2: Answer engines (2014-2022). Google started answering questions directly in the search results. Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and voice assistant answers meant users got answers without clicking. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) was born: optimize to be the answer, not just rank near it.
Era 3: Generative engines (2022-present). AI models now generate synthesized answers using multiple sources. ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot give users conversational answers that cite sources. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) was born: optimize to be cited by AI as a trusted source.
The user's eye now starts at the AI-generated layer. If your company is not in that layer, a growing percentage of potential buyers will never find you.
What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring website content so that search engines and voice assistants select it as the direct answer to a question. Instead of appearing as one of ten blue links, the content appears as a featured snippet, People Also Ask result, or voice response.
AEO targets:
- Featured snippets — the answer box at the top of Google search results
- People Also Ask — expandable question boxes that appear in search results
- Voice assistant answers — what Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri read aloud
- FAQ rich results — structured FAQ content that appears directly in search
The key technique is placing a concise, complete answer (40-60 words) directly under a heading that matches or closely mirrors the search query. The answer must be self-contained. Google needs to be able to extract it cleanly.
What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content citable by AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot. The goal is for your brand to appear as a trusted source in AI-generated answers, rather than being invisible in the AI layer entirely.
GEO differs from AEO in a fundamental way: AEO optimizes for extraction (Google pulls your answer into a snippet), while GEO optimizes for citation (an AI model references your content as a source while generating its own answer).
What makes AI models cite a source:
- Depth and comprehensiveness — thin content does not get cited
- Factual density — specific numbers, data points, and benchmarks
- Authority signals — author credentials, brand mentions, backlinks from respected sources
- Structured content — clear headings, definitions, tables, and lists that AI can parse
- Topical authority — multiple pages covering related aspects of the same topic
AEO vs GEO: Key Differences
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Targets | Featured snippets, PAA, voice | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity |
| How it works | Structure for extraction | Structure for citation |
| Content format | Concise definitions, lists, tables | Comprehensive, data-rich, authoritative |
| Timeline | Weeks to months | Weeks (but volatile) |
| Measurement | Snippet wins, PAA presence | AI brand mentions, citation tracking |
Why B2B Companies Need AI Search Optimization Now
The shift is already happening. B2B buyers increasingly start research with AI tools rather than Google. When a procurement director asks Perplexity "what are the best contract management platforms for mid-market companies," the platforms that appear in that answer get the first look. Those that do not appear do not exist in that buyer's research process.
Three reasons this matters now:
- Zero-click is growing. If the AI answers the question completely, the buyer never visits your website. Your content either contributes to that answer or it is invisible.
- Early movers build a moat. AI models build topical associations over time. Companies that establish authority early become the default sources that models reference repeatedly.
- It compounds with traditional SEO. Content optimized for AEO and GEO also ranks well in traditional search. The techniques (depth, structure, authority) are the same things Google has always rewarded.
How to Start with AI Search Optimization
- Audit your current AI visibility. Search your brand name and category terms in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Are you being mentioned? Are competitors being mentioned instead?
- Structure content for extraction. Add clear definitions under heading-matched queries. Use lists, tables, and concise answer paragraphs that AI can pull from.
- Add structured data. Implement FAQ, Article, and Organization schema markup. This gives search engines and AI explicit signals about your content structure.
- Build topical authority. Create comprehensive content clusters around your core topics, not isolated thin pages. AI models favor sources that demonstrate deep expertise.
- Create cite-worthy content. Original data, benchmarks, frameworks, and research that AI models reference because no one else has the information.
